Getting Started
This guide takes you from deployment to a first conversation with Content Intelligence through CIN MCP: what you need, the setup sequence, and a few questions to try.
Prerequisites
Before you start working with CIN MCP, ensure you have the following prerequisites.
Required Access
- A Hyland environment subscribed to the Content Intelligence products you'll use
- A Hyland user in that environment for each person, with a role for each product (see Subscription and Roles)
- The CIN MCP client ID and secret Hyland generates and provides when CIN MCP is deployed for you
- A supported desktop client: the Claude desktop app (a Claude Team or Enterprise plan for an organization connector), Claude Code, or OpenAI Codex
Supported clients are desktop only: the Claude desktop app (chat and Cowork), Claude Code, and OpenAI Codex. Web clients, such as claude.ai or ChatGPT in a browser, aren't supported.
Required Knowledge
- How to add a connector or MCP server in your AI client
- For administrators: the CIC Administration Portal
Required Tools
- A web browser for the Hyland sign-in
- For Claude Code or Codex: a terminal
Setup Process
To set up your CIC account to use CIN MCP, complete the following steps:
Step 1: Configure Subscriptions, Users, and Roles
Your environment must be subscribed to each product, and each user needs a role for it. Every user also needs a role for the app key your CIN MCP OAuth client is bound to, or sign-in is refused. See Subscription and Roles for more information.
Step 2: Set Up Your OAuth Client
When CIN MCP is deployed for you, Hyland registers an OAuth client for your environment in Hyland IAM, with the client ID cin-claude-[customerid], and provides the client ID and secret to your administrator through a secure channel.
Keep the client secret in a password manager or secrets store. Never put it in chat, email, or a ticket.
Each client is bound to one Hyland environment. If you have several environments, you need one client and one connector per environment. The server URL is the same.
Step 3: Connect Your AI Client
Connect your AI client by following the instructions in the appropriate guide. Use the following server URL: https://cin-mcp.ai.app.hyland.com/mcp.
| Client | Guide |
|---|---|
| Claude desktop app and Claude Cowork | Connect Claude (organization connector) |
| Claude Code | Connect Claude Code |
| OpenAI Codex | Connect Codex |
| Agent Builder agents | Use CIN MCP in Agent Builder |
Step 4: Sign In
Each user signs in with their own Hyland account in the browser window the client opens. The session lasts 15 minutes by default; after that the client asks the user to sign in again.
Quick Start
Prerequisites
Ensure the connector is set up and you're signed in.
Step 1: Check the Connection
Ask the following:
List the Agent Builder agent types.
A list of agent types, such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Graph RAG, Tool, and Task agents, is returned.
Step 2: Search Your Content
Enter the following prompts:
Search Content Lake for billing statements and list the five most relevant.
Then:
Summarize the first one.
Step 3: Ask a Discovery Agent
Enter the following prompt:
Which Knowledge Discovery agents can I use?
Then ask one of them a question about your content and look at the citations.
Read-only questions are safest for a first try. The Tool Reference marks which tools change or delete data.
Common Issues
| Issue | What To Do |
|---|---|
| The client asks you to sign in again. | The session has expired. Sign in again. |
| "No tenant environment for this request" | Reconnect the connector so it requests the current scopes. |
| Sign-in fails with "has not been assigned any roles for the app…" | Ask your administrator for a role for that app in your environment. |
| One product's tools fail with HTTP 403. | You have no role for that product. Ask your administrator for one. |
See Error Reference for more information.
